This peony bloomed briefly last month and was the first of the season. All my others are now in various stages of budding. The anticipation is palpable! This is Paeonia tenuifolia, with gloriously simple but intensely crimson petals and yellow stamens (this one was being shy and would not open up when my camera was near, maybe because it was feeding a host of hungry insects!). The fine foliage is unusual for a peony.
